INTRODUCTION
-
On 20th of April 1931, the erstwhile South Indian Railway Company started a "Traffic Training School" in the General Offices compound (Present Divisional office) for the purpose of training Probationers and Signalers of Traffic Department

In 1932, it was shifted to the old engineering workshop building sprawling 16 acres site the present location. The Institute was having one room with working models and it was headed by an Assistant Traffic Superintendent with two instructors

In 1952, after the formation of Southern Railway, by integrating the training schools that were functioning at MYS, MAS and TPJ Zonal Training School was formed at Tiruchirappalli.

On 06.03.1982, present administrative block was opened by Shri.M.S.GUJRAL, Chairman, Railway Board.

In 1992, based on the recommendations of the technical committee, it was renamed as Zonal Training Centre.

In 2003, again it was renamed as Zonal Railway Training Institute
- With effect from 14th June 2018 it is renamed as ‘Multi Disciplinary Zonal Training Institute’ with PCPO as Administrative In-charge
